In 2002 BMW released the X5 4.6is to the truck-buying market. The X5 came in three configurations: 4.4i, 4.6is, and 3.0i. The 4.6is configuration is powered by the 4.6-liter eight-cylinder engine, which makes 21 highway miles and 15 city. The X5 competes in the Sport Utility market segment, in direct competition with Hyundai.

Performance

The X5 4.6is is equipped with a BMW 4.6 liter eight-cylinder engine that utilizes 32 valves. The engine is mated to a ZF 5-speed Transmission. This configuration has proven to be a successful design for BMW.

The X5 uses power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The truck uses coil and coil springs front and rear respectively.

The fuel system for the 2002 X5 is a Bosch M 7.2 design, running on gasoline fuel. The fuel flow is regulated by a electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The storage capacity of the fuel tank is 24.30 gallons.

X5 4.6is Statistics

The X5 is 183.70 inches long, 73.70 inches wide, and 67.50 inches high. It has a wheelbase of 111.00 inches. It is able to seat 5 comfortably.

The standard warranty period for the X5 is 48 months, or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. The warranty also includes a warranty on the drivetrain for 48 months or 50,000 miles respectively. This is standard in the sport utility market. Extended warranties are also available through the dealer.

The original manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) was $38,900 when new, with a dealer invoice cost of $35,560. This price was in line with the industry average price for a 4-door Sport Utility.

Fuel Efficiency

The 2002 X5 gets 21 miles/gallon on the highway and only 15 in the city. This is average for a sport utility truck.

The vehicle is available in Alpine White, Black Sapphire Metallic, Grey Green Metallic, Jet Black, Oxford Green Metallic, Pearl Beige Metallic, Siena Red Metallic, Steel Gray Metallic, Titanium Silver Metallic, and Topaz Blue Metallic.

In Summary

The 2002 model year was unsuccessful for the BMW X5. The introduction of several trim levels (along with the 4.6is version) meant that buyers had several options to choose from..
