Getting 18 Miles a Gallon: The BMW X5 for 2003

BMW X5

There have been several award-winning trucks from BMW over the years, including the BMW X5 of 2003. There are three trim levels to the X5, including 3.0i, 4.4i, and 4.6is. The 4.6is version is one of the more popular options, outselling other configurations. Like in 2002 the popular 4.6 liter has made this a popular choice for sport utility buyers across the country.

BMW X5 Engine Specs

Standard equipment in the X5 for 2002 and 2003 includes the 4.6 liter engine by BMW, weighing in at 8 cylinders and thirty two valves. A 5-speed Automatic Transmission puts the power of the engine to the pavement. This is a long-standing favorite for buyers in the Sport Utility arena.

The fuel system for the 2003 X5 is a Bosch M 7.2 system, running on gasoline . The fuel is controlled by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The 24.30-gallon tank provides the fuel storage for longer trips.

Steering control is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The X5 comes equipped with power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. The truck uses coil front springs and coil in the rear.

Vehicle Statistics

The X5 is 183.70 inches long, 73.70 inches wide, and 69.00 inches high. It has a wheelbase of 111.00 inches. It is able to seat 5 comfortably.

The original manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) was $49,950 when new, with a dealer invoice cost of $45,615. This price was in line with the industry average price for a 4-door Sport Utility.

The standard warranty period for the X5 is 48 months, or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. This is standard in the sport utility market.

Fuel Efficiency

The 2003 X5 gets 18 miles/gallon on the highway and only 14 in the city. This is subpar for a sport utility truck.

What We Think of the BMW X5

The 2003 model year was telling year for the BMW X5. The introduction of several trim levels (along with the 4.6is version) meant that buyers could find the version that best suited their needs.

Good article. At first I felt like I needed to refute your review of the BMW X5, but after further reflection I can see your point of view. Perhaps my personal X5 4.6is is an abberation. What is everyone else’s experiences?
