The restyled X6 xDrive50i is equipped with a 4.4-liter eight-cylinder engine that utilizes 32 valves. The engine is mated to a ZF six-speed transmission. This has resulted in an increase in horsepower and torque over the 2008 version.

The fuel system for the 2009 X6 is a Siemens MS system, running on gasoline . The fuel is controlled by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The 12-gallon tank provides the fuel storage for longer trips.
